DANCING ACROSS THE REGION

With BLOCK en territoires, Le BLOCK · Centre Chorégraphique National de Rillieux-la-Pape aims to bring hip-hop and underground dance to audiences beyond the Lyon metropolitan area. The programme extends throughout the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, with a particular focus on rural areas where access to cultural venues and resources is more limited.

BLOCK en territoires offers local partners, including local authorities, heritage sites, schools, community centres and other organisations, a programme of performances and outreach workshops. The programme includes three works choreographed by Associate Artists of Le BLOCK · CCNR: Notre Lumière by Compagnie IAAL, UPSHOT by Compagnie Relevant and Pace, Lock & Havin’funk by Funkonnection, as well as the BLOCK OUT battle presented by Supreme Legacy.

Notre Lumière

Notre Lumière brings together five dancers from the clubbing and hip-hop scenes. The piece celebrates the diversity of femininities and the unique inner light within each performer.

The piece echoes the lights of the clubs, spaces that enabled oppressed communities, including Black, Latino and LGBTQIA+ communities, to express themselves freely: House Dance in clubs between Chicago and New York, and Waacking in Los Angeles during the 1970s and 1980s.

UPSHOT

UPSHOT explores the behaviours, norms and attitudes of an individual in relation to a group: excluded, included, marginalised.

Through distinct choreographic vocabularies, each dancer takes on different social roles according to the codes they already possess and those they must acquire in order to become part of the group. Movement and the body become ways of presenting oneself to others, expressing identity and opening up a dialogue.

The piece explores the confrontation between the individual and the group, the different degrees of inclusion and exclusion, and takes us on a journey through the symbols and representations we construct of ourselves.

FUNKONNECTION

Pace, Lock & Havin’funk 

Pace, Lock & Havin’funk is a tribute to Soul Dance and Locking, two of the roots of hip-hop culture.

The show is a concentrated burst of joy, groove and funky vibes. The Funkonnection team draws audiences into a universe that is both smooth and energetic, taking them on a journey into the heart of funk, where every movement expresses freedom, sharing and celebration.

The title, a playful nod to one of hip-hop culture’s iconic mottos, “Peace, Love and Having Fun”, reflects the project’s original intention: to highlight the importance of Soul Dance and Locking in the evolution of hip-hop dance, while celebrating the fundamental values they embody.

SUPREME LEGACY

Block out

Co-produced by Le BLOCK and Supreme Legacy, this battle showcase brings together four dancers from hip-hop and underground dance backgrounds.

On a stage transformed into a ring, a DJ sets the rhythm, an MC sets the scene, and the dancers respond to one another through their own styles and energy. Each round offers audiences a chance to discover the codes of the battle: musicality, improvisation, challenge, creativity and respect for the opponent.

There is no professional jury here. The audience watches, encourages and ultimately chooses the winner.

Accessible to newcomers and dedicated fans alike, BLOCK OUT offers an immersive introduction to hip-hop culture, using performance and interaction with the audience to reveal what lies at the very heart of a battle.
