Creation of Yuval Pick
Transmission by Noémie De Almeida Ferreira & Yuval Pick

January to May 2025

During this transmission, young dancers from Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York (USA) are invited to join the world of Flowers crack concrete.

The origins…

Since 2018, Flowers crack concrete has been a fully-fledged participatory creation. Its choreographer Yuval Pick and the dancers of his company transmit it to groups of amateur or trainee performers of all ages and backgrounds. An in situ piece suitable for theaters and outdoor spaces not dedicated to dance, Flowers crack concrete questions our sense of belonging to a group and to a common space, as a place of convergence and difference.

Rewritten in 2021 and again in 2022 for the 55 dancers in the preparatory and contemporary DNSPD programs at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse (CNSMD) in Paris, Flowers crack concrete toured under the name Bugger in several Parisian theaters from March to April 2022: Théâtre des Abbesses, Palais de la Porte Dorée and Chaillot – Théâtre National de la Danse.

Intentions

Flowers crack concrete is an invitation to reach out into the unknown, to extricate oneself from the self in order to find the other, to transcend the boundaries that separate us. For dance is above all an encounter.

I try to invent a new folklore with people, a dance that brings them together and reflects their individuality. We’ve created a language of movement that lets you immediately feel the power of unison. The group, constantly transformed, is created by propagation in real time, while at the same time each individual emerges from the whole with his or her own originality. Flowers crack concrete reveals our ability to cross the lines that seem imposed on us, and to invent a shared space that includes the singularities of each individual.” — Yuval Pick
