After a period in which the notion of the group was put to the test, the Relevant Company has decided to place it at the heart of its new creation, STAND OUT.
The Relevant Company is itself a group of five choreographers who think, work and create together: we’ve been experimenting and living the group since we started out. It’s a theme that resonates with us.
That’s why we first explored it with the piece UPSHOT, which dealt with the behaviour of the individual in relation to the group, particularly through the notions of exclusion, inclusion and marginalisation that can be experienced within a society. In this new creation, we want to explore the relationships between individuals within a group, their interactions, and highlight the notion of individuality within the collective.
Our experience of co-creation has made us aware of the richness that each dancer brings to the group, and that’s what we want to show on stage.
In this quintet, the collective aims to explore the individuality of each member of a group. What is the relationship between the individual and the group? The individual is built and nourished by the group, and the group allows the identity of each member to develop. To address this notion of individuality within the group, the particularities and qualities of each dancer will be brought to the fore. Thus, throughout the piece, each dancer's own gestures will be highlighted, like an ode to difference.
The piece also examines the question of organization within the group, the role of each individual, as well as interpersonal relations and behaviors between members, and the tensions that can arise as a result. The choreographic work will focus on notions such as support, betrayal, success and failure.

The members of Relevant Dance Company are all from Lyon. They decided to form their own company in 2016 after taking part in “Ba-bel 8.3”, a participatory project led by the Maison de la Danse de Lyon and choreographed by Abou Lagraa. They are interested in exploring other dance styles and worlds, motivated and driven by the creative energy of hip-hop. Their aim is to address human and social issues, all the while challenging and questioning contemporary society.
