With Weaver, a dance piece for three female dancers, I would like to use the image of weaving and its inherent creative potential of connecting and net-working and transfer it into a contemporary choreographic reflection on our society today – a story in which past and future, individual and collective fate of the female body are interwoven into the dense fabric of social togetherness.
Weaver is a continuation of my research along the deconstruction of gender stereotypes, taking this time a closer look on what is known to be female qualities. Instead of continuing the established narrative of the female to be weak and silent, I want to expose its strength and heroic potential, through the filter of three characters in their own very complexity.
For this I want to take the time and work with each dancer individually. In recent years, I have focused on solo work, creating "Warrior" and "Dreamer" for myself. During this time, I have refined what I call the "Emotional Body" movement practice - a practice that focuses on translating sensations and emotional states that run through my body into movement material - and found a way to use it in a choreographic way to create characters on stage (the Warrior and the Dreamer). After these last three years of solo work, I would like to bring this work back to other bodies, and in doing so, devote more time to their individual knowledge, abilities, emotional expressions and skills. In the past, I very often lacked this individual approach, as the working group dynamic diluted the specificity of each individual. However, when I work with each dancer individually, I expect that after creating a solid and distinctive foundation, the encounter between them will be more specific.
In addition to this physical approach I also would like to introduce different kinds of fabrics and threads to the dancers and experiment how this actual material can emphasize the notion of entanglement and the strive for liberation for instance as a costume, extension of the body, cocoon, and so on.
