Director – Yuval Pick
Yuval Pick creates innovative dialogues between music,
space and tangible organic movement vocabulary. He intertwines rhythmic
elements and recomposes spaces through it.
Yuval’s work aims to find ways to connect people together while reinforcing their particularity.
The relationships between individuals and group are often highlighted and challenged in his work in order to create a dance experience that brings people together and motivates them to invent new common space.
After an extensive career as choreographer, dancer and teacher, Yuval Pick was nominated director of the National Choreographic Center in Rillieux-la-Pape in August 2011. He studied at the Bat-Dor Dance School in Tel Aviv, then joined the Batsheva Dance Company in 1991. Four years later he starts working as a guest artist with, Tero Saarinen, Carolyn Carlson and Russel Maliphant, among others. In 1999 he joined the Lyon’s Opera Ballet, and founded his own company, The Guests, in 2002.
Upon his arrival to the National Choreographic Center Yuval Pick founded a new dance company and developed a rich repertory of works marked by their elaborated movement vocabulary, accompanied by worldly named composers. In 2012, No play hero, with the music of David Lang and Folks for the Biennale of Dance in Lyon. Then, two creations in 2014, the duet loom with the music of Nico Muhly and Ply piece for five dancers with the American composer Ashley Fure. In 2015, he creates Eddies for four dancers with a dialogue between medieval and electronic music and then Are friends electric? for six dancers inspired by the music of Kraftwerk.In 2016, Yuval Pick was commissioned to create a site-specific project for the Centre des Monuments Nationaux, In France. This project, Hydra, is presented since all over the world in museums, historical monuments and festivals.In January 2018, he creates Acta est fabula in Chaillot – Théâtre National de la Danse, and a year later, he creates a new version for young audience: Lil’Acta.In January 2020, he will present his new creation, In D minor for nine dancers, in St-Nazaire’s national theater, and will create a piece for the Lyon’s Opera ballet in April 2020.

1981 Integrated the Petach-Tikva folk dance company
1987 Started studying at the Bat-Dor Dance School in Tel-Aviv
1991 Joined “Batsheva Dance Company”, where he interpreted Tabula Rasa, Anaphasa, Black Milk of Ohad Naharin and met William Forsythe, Jirí Kylián, Vera Mantero and Angelin Preljocaj,
1995 Started to collaborate with Tero Saarinen Company in Helsinki
1996 He was awarded “Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris” International Dance competition
1997 Participated at the creation Dall’Interno of Carolyn Carlson and created Kvedim, his first piece, price-winning at “Festival Gvanim” in Tel-Aviv
1998 Created Nice day for a white wedding for the Israeli Festival
1999 Joined the Lyon Opera Ballet where he interprets pieces of Mats Ek, William Forsythe and Jirí Kylián
2001 Performed & toured with Russel Maliphant’s Company-London
2002 He founded The Guests Company in Lyon and created the solo Cotton crown for the Venice Biennale invited by Carolyn Carlson
2004 Created the trio Compass and Le Sacre for the CCN “Ballet de Lorraine”
2005 Creation of the tryptic Tuning including the trio Popular Music and the solo Evol,
2006 Creation of Strand Behind for the CNSMD of Lyon and the Agora Festival – IRCAM
2007 Creation of Look white inside at Toboggan Theater & International Dance Festival of Cannes
2008 Creation of the duet 17 drops for the Biennale “Musiques en Scène” at the “Maison de la Danse” in Lyon & the solo Living in pieces for Lyon Dance Biennale

2015 Creation of Apnée (corps vocal) for 4 dancers and 6 singers in collaboration with Samuel Sighicelli and Spirito - Chœurs et solistes de Lyon.
His term as director of the CCNR was renewed for three years. Jean-Jack Queyranne presents to him the insignia of Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des lettres.
