Pastorale

"I'm not going to die in 4/4!" Moondog
This project is born out of a fascination with the universe of Moondog, composer and musician, cosmologist, poet and inventor of various musical instruments based in New York City in 1950's. Dressed as a viking, he could be found performing daily on the sidewalk between 54th Street and sixth Avenue, selling his scores to passersby. Moondog was blind from birth and created compositions combining city sounds, polyrhythmic elements, nature recordings and voices.
My interest in working with his music was born from a desire to look closer at the universe that generated them, and then to explore it through the body. My goal is to reveal what comes out of the perception of the outside world, and at the same time from an intimate and secret inner vision, generating a pastoral. Like when the human soul tries to follow the thread of a thought in constant flux, illuminating the labyrinth of its intimate investigations.
It is in this delicate and constant operation of the soul that I see the attempt to flee, to cheat death. This Pastoral is a depiction of that elsewhere, a utopian place where nature offers its beauty to man.
The project intends to investigate the idea of the pastoral as a musical and choreographic composition, an attempt to escape from ourselves and access another plane. Unison and counterpoint between body and rhythm, between gestures and the intimate visions that generated them, are the main elements. The set of elements external to the body suggests a path, a rhythmic and musical orientation made up of points, curved and straight lines, suspensions, voids. As the music creates defined and perceivable spaces, directions, pressures and voids, so must the body enter into this physical and sonic space, proceeding by deduction, intuition, grabbing what it can to help it along the way in an attempt to find and follow that intangible telepathy between the sonic body and the physical body, which will carry it along its path towards escape to a pure state of grace where time and space become one.
